This project involved the design, supply and installation support of an outdoor cage football pitch serving a community sports facility in South Africa. UNIGRASS supplied non-infill football artificial grass, a product engineered specifically for high-frequency community use in tropical and subtropical outdoor environments.
THE CHALLENGE
1. Extreme UV and Heat Exposure
South Africa's outdoor playing environments receive intense direct sunlight for the majority of the year. Surface temperatures on a conventional synthetic turf can exceed ambient air temperature significantly, accelerating yarn degradation and color fading. Any grass system deployed here must maintain structural integrity and color retention across a multi-year service life.
2. High-Frequency Use Without Professional Maintenance
Community venues typically operate under minimal maintenance regimes. Unlike managed stadium turf, this pitch would be used daily by multiple groups without scheduled infill replenishment, brushing programs, or on-site groundskeeping staff. The surface needed to perform consistently under those conditions from day one.
3. Infill Management in Public Spaces
Traditional SBR rubber infill requires regular upkeep. Over time, you need to add more infill, redistribute it, and keep it clean to keep the field performing well. In community or public areas with limited maintenance support, infill can shift or get contaminated. This slowly wears down the surface and affects play quality.
4. Safety and Durability for Cage Football
Cage football’s enclosed, tight space places high demands on the pitch, particularly at the edges. The grass must withstand repeated lateral wear from players sprinting across the full pitch width, maintaining strong seams and resilient fibers.
THE UNIGRASS SOLUTION
1. Non-Infill Yarn Architecture
The yarn is engineered to deliver adequate cushioning and ball response characteristics without requiring rubber crumb or sand infill. This eliminates the infill maintenance cycle entirely, reducing the total cost of ownership over the turf's service life while removing the contamination and migration risks associated with loose-fill materials.
2. UV-Stabilized Polyethylene Fiber
The grass fiber incorporates UV stabilizers throughout the manufacturing process, not applied as a surface coating. This ensures that UV protection remains consistent as the pile experiences normal wear rather than degrading from the surface inward.
3. High-Drainage Backing System
The composite PP and non-woven backing includes a structured drainage architecture that channels rainwater rapidly off the surface. This prevents surface waterlogging during the wet season and maintains consistent playability across weather conditions.
4. Full Project Supply Scope
UNIGRASS offers comprehensive, one-stop solutions for cage football projects. Beyond premium artificial turf, we can coordinate all ancillary infrastructure to deliver a fully functional facility, including perimeter cage fencing, standard pitch line marking, and integration with supporting systems like floodlighting. This turnkey approach ensures a smooth, efficient installation process.
RESULTS and OUTCOMES
The completed pitch delivers a low-maintenance, high-durability surface for daily community football in South Africa's high-heat outdoor environment. UNIGRASS non-infill artificial grass eliminates the rubber infill maintenance cycle. Rapid drainage ensures year-round playability, and the full-perimeter cage fencing creates a safe, contained playing environment, giving the local community access to a professional-standard football facility with minimal ongoing operational cost.
"The playing surface performs exactly as specified, consistent underfoot feel, no infill to manage, and the pitch looks professional even after months of daily use." — Operator, South Africa
