Artificial Grass Football Field in Afghanistan

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Football ranks as the most popular team sport throughout Central Asia and the Middle East. Driven by rising demand for all-year training and competition venues, a local Afghan sports organisation planned to construct a professional football pitch for regular matches, youth academy training and community recreational activities. The client put forward explicit demands for highly durable artificial grass that could withstand the region’s extreme harsh natural conditions, while eliminating the high water consumption, heavy maintenance workload and ageing risks inherent to natural grass. Having assessed a range of artificial turf manufacturers, the client ultimately partnered with UNIGRASS, recognising our proven track record of delivering projects in severe climate zones and our capacity to provide fully integrated, ready-to-install field solutions for this landlocked region.

The Challenge

1. Extreme Dual-Season Climate

Unlike the Gulf region, Afghanistan is not just hot. Summers regularly exceed 40°C in urban lowlands, while winters in higher-altitude cities drop below −15°C. A football pitch surface must withstand not only UV degradation and heat expansion, but also freeze-thaw cycling that can delaminate inferior backing systems and cause fibre brittleness.

2. Severe Water Scarcity

Afghanistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. Natural grass is simply not viable as a year-round match surface in most regions, irrigation infrastructure is unreliable, water costs are high, and droughts are frequent. Any sports surface solution had to be zero-irrigation by design.

3. Persistent Sand and Dust Intrusion

The Afghan climate includes frequent dust storms and wind-borne particulate. These conditions are hostile to conventional drainage systems; fine sand particles can block infill layers and drainage perforations, reducing water permeability and accelerating surface ageing.

4. Complex Logistics and Supply Chain

Afghanistan is landlocked, with limited port access, multi-border customs procedures, and underdeveloped inland freight infrastructure. Delivering and installing a full-scale football pitch, including turf rolls, infill material, line marking, perimeter fencing, and floodlighting integration — required precise project coordination from factory to final handover.

The UNIGRASS SOULUTION

1. All-Season Thermal Stability

Afghanistan's temperature swings demand a turf system that performs at both extremes. UNIGRASS PRO MAX 50mm uses a PE monofilament compound that remains flexible at −20°C and dimensionally stable above 60°C surface temperature, eliminating freeze-thaw delamination and summer fibre brittleness.

2. Zero-Irrigation Surface Design

No water connection to the pitch is required under normal use. The synthetic surface eliminates irrigation dependency entirely, with routine maintenance limited to periodic brushing and infill top-up. It's viable for facility operators in water-scarce regions without specialist groundskeeping resources.

3. Dust-Resistant Quick Drain Architecture

The backing system features large-aperture drainage perforations rated at ≥1,500 mm/hour. Surface permeability is maintained throughout the product lifespan without periodic deep-cleaning.

4. Factory-to-Site Turnkey Delivery

UNIGRASS managed the complete logistics chain from China to the Afghanistan project site — including pre-shipment quality inspection, multi-border freight documentation, overland transit coordination, and professional installation guidance. Single point of contact from order to handover.

RESULTS and OUTCOMES

The completed pitch has been in active use since handover, supporting regular matches, night training sessions and community football activity year-round.
