Football is more than a sport in Gambia—it’s a unifying language across communities. To give local players a reliable space to play year-round, UNIGRASS replaced the uneven natural pitch with a durable, low-maintenance artificial grass football field built to perform in every season.
THE CHALLENGE
1. Rainy Season
Gambia experiences a concentrated rainy season (roughly June to October) driven by the West African Monsoon. Standard natural football pitches, often built on compacted laterite soil — absorb minimal water, turning rapidly into muddy, slippery surfaces after every downpour. Match cancellations, ankle injuries from unstable footing, and prolonged ground repair costs are routine problems.
2. Dry Season
From November to May, the Harmattan wind brings intense dry heat. Without irrigation infrastructure, natural grass fields crack, harden, and turn to bare dust. A pitch that was waterlogged in October becomes a concrete-hard surface by February — causing impact injuries, turf burns, and discouraging players from consistent training.
3. Limited Maintenance Resources
Community sports facilities in Gambia typically operate on restricted budgets with minimal groundskeeping staff. Natural grass demands constant mowing, watering, fertilizing, and resowing, a cycle that is financially and logistically unsustainable for grassroots operators.
4. Youth Safety
Young players (ages 7 to 18) training daily on unsafe surfaces face elevated risks of abrasion, twisted ankles, and impact injuries. For NGOs, sports clubs, and community organizations investing in youth football, the liability and ethical responsibility of player safety is paramount.
THE UNIGRASS SOLUTION

1. High-Drainage Backing
The turf backing features a reinforced polypropylene (PP) primary layer with a densely perforated SBR secondary coating. Drainage rates exceed 180 mm per hour, meaning even after Gambia's heaviest monsoon downpours, the artificial grass football pitch surface clears and becomes playable in minutes, not hours. Waterlogged cancellations are eliminated.
2. UV-Stabilized Non-Infill Fiber
The monofilament PE fiber is blended with high-grade UV inhibitors during the extrusion process, protecting the fiber from photodegradation under West Africa's intense solar radiation. Without infill material, the surface remains consistently soft and resilient — no compaction, no hardening, no seasonal performance variation.
