Football enjoys huge popularity across Togo, and Le Chaudron du Nord football pitch serves as a vital local sports landmark in Kara, northern Togo. Named “Le Chaudron du Nord”, which means “The Cauldron of the North”, this venue stands for passionate football culture in the northern region. The site was newly completed and launched in July 2026 to satisfy the growing demand from local football enthusiasts and amateur teams, delivering a reliable all-weather playing field for grassroots leagues, night games and community sports gatherings. UNIGRASS supplied the premium artificial football turf for this community football venue.

The Challenge

1. Harsh Tropical Climate

Outdoor sports surfaces in Togo are situated in one of the most challenging environments in West Africa, characterized by prolonged exposure to scorching sun and high temperatures, as well as heavy rainfall during the wet season. Under these conditions, natural turf withers and leaves bare patches due to intense heat during the dry season, while turning into a quagmire during the rains—often rendering the field unusable for weeks at a time. Consequently, any surfacing material installed here must be resistant to fading from intense UV radiation and possess excellent drainage capabilities to ensure the field remains playable even during sudden, heavy downpours.

2. Intensive Day-and-Night Community Use

As a public space for local football supporters and amateur teams, this pitch sees heavy regular use. It hosts grassroots league matches, evening lit kickabouts and weekend community events. Such nearly constant traffic requires a hard-wearing surface that retains its form and colour year-round. It must also offer reliable, safe playing conditions for players of all ages and abilities.

3. Low maintenance for community operation

As a community-operated sports field, the football turf needs to reduce daily maintenance workload. The surface should remain functional all year round without complex upkeep.

UNIGRASS Solution

1. Professional-Grade Artificial Football Turf

UNIGRASS supplied an artificial football turf engineered to deliver a true, even playing surface that meets international match-level performance standards. The dense polyethylene fibres reproduce the look and response of well-kept natural grass, giving players reliable ball roll, natural footing and predictable bounce for competitive small-sided football. Crisp, precisely fitted white line markings frame the pitch for clean gameplay from the very first match.

2. Built for Heat and Relentless UV

The turf fibres are UV-stabilised to withstand prolonged, intense sunshine without colour-fade or brittleness. Under Togo's punishing sun, the surface holds its rich, uniform green and retains its elasticity year after year, so the field looks as sharp in its third season as it did on opening day, protecting the operator's investment over the long term.

3. Fast Drainage for Heavy Tropical Rain

Backed by a permeable backing system, the turf drains rainwater quickly and evenly, clearing the surface soon after even the heaviest downpour. Players can return to the pitch fast once the rain eases, keeping league fixtures and evening sessions on schedule right through the wet season.

4. A Safe, Hard-Wearing Surface for Cage Football

Purpose-matched to a caged, high-intensity pitch, the turf combines cushioning underfoot with strong wear resistance in the high-traffic zones. It provides a stable, low-abrasion surface that reduces the risk of slips and knocks during fast, close-quarters play, while comfortably absorbing the heavy, repeated use of a community field open from morning to night.

RESULTS and OUTCOMES

Le Chaudron du Nord opened to the public in July 2026, giving Kara a modern, all-weather football field it had never had before. From day one the UNIGRASS surface delivered a consistent, professional-quality pitch for grassroots leagues, evening recreation matches and community events alike — playable in blazing heat and usable again minutes after tropical rain. The turf's rich colour, dependable footing and low-maintenance durability have made the venue a key regional sports field for Northern Togo.
