In Bahrain, a compact island nation with a passionate football culture. A commercial sports facility operator based in Bahrain was looking for professional-grade sports surfacing. The local climate is extremely harsh for sports ground materials. For this requirement, the operator selected UNIGRASS.
The Challenge
1. Extreme Climate
Summer air temperatures in Bahrain regularly exceeding 40°C. Surface temperatures on an uncoated artificial grass football pitch can climb above 70°C. This speeds up fibre degradation, causes colour fading and damages the backing integrity in just one season. Only a turf system engineered specifically for high-heat environments can hold its performance over a decade of daily play.
2. Sand-Laden Wind and Dust Abrasion
Unlike tropical environments, the Gulf's dry shamal winds carry fine abrasive particulates that infiltrate fibre bundles and accelerate wear on both the yarn surface and the backing structure. Inferior synthetic turf loses its upright posture and ball-roll consistency within months under these conditions. The turf specification here prioritised fibre resilience and tufting density to resist compaction and abrasion.
3. High-Frequency and Intensive Use
A commercial football pitch in Bahrain operates across extended hours to meet demand. The surface must maintain consistent playing characteristics regardless of how many hours per week it is used. This is not a weekend pitch, it is working infrastructure.
UNIGRASS Solution
1. Heat-Resistant Synthetic Turf Fibres
The turf yarn incorporates UV stabilisers formulated for prolonged exposure to high-intensity solar radiation. Polyethylene monofilament construction maintains elasticity and fibre memory even at elevated surface temperatures, resisting the brittleness, colour fade and fibre matting that affect lower-specification products under Gulf conditions. Long-term colour stability is built into the polymer compound, not applied as a surface coating.
2. Durable Woven-In Field Markings
All pitch markings are integrated using durable white yarn woven directly into the turf fabric during manufacture. There is no painting, no adhesive tape, and no repainting schedule. Markings retain full definition throughout the product lifespan, even under continuous UV exposure and heavy foot traffic, a critical advantage for a commercially operated football pitch.
3. High-Density Tufting
High-density tufting keeps fibres upright under heavy use — maintaining consistent ball roll and reliable player traction across the full pitch. The infill combines silica sand and SBR rubber granules, layered to the correct depth to deliver proper shock absorption and energy restitution. Spreading was done by mechanical equipment for even, precise distribution, no guesswork, no uneven patches.
RESULTS and OUTCOMES
The completed artificial grass football pitch in Bahrain delivers a professional playing surface capable of withstanding the Gulf's most demanding environmental conditions.
"The pitch has been in use every day since handover. The surface still plays exactly as it did on day one. That's what we needed." — Facility Manager
