The challenge was not space. The garden was large enough for a regulation mini football court. The challenge was finding an artificial grass solution that could survive Ireland's notoriously wet, overcast climate while remaining safe for children, without the mess of infill materials.
THE CHALLENGE
1. No chemical infill
Traditional football pitches use sand and rubber granule infill (often SBR crumb rubber) to stabilize the turf and provide cushioning. For a family home, especially with young children, the homeowners wanted to avoid loose rubber particles that can stick to clothing, get tracked indoors, and raise health concerns. They needed a non-infill artificial grass solution that delivers performance without the mess.
2. Demands serious drainage
Ireland receives rainfall on average 150–225 days per year. A backyard pitch must drain rapidly after heavy rain, resist surface puddling, and remain non-slip when wet.
3. Without ongoing maintenance
Alternating dark and light green stripes, crisp white line markings, and a regulation-looking layout. However, they had no interest in repainting lines seasonally or re-grooming infill every month.
4. Shock absorption
With children playing daily, the surface needed to be forgiving on falls, supporting knees and joints — while remaining firm enough for ball control and play.
THE UNIGRASS SOLUTION
1. Infill-free fiber system
UNIGRASS non-infill turf combines resilient monofilament and curly PE fibers that recover their shape naturally, no sand or rubber granules required to hold the pile upright. Therefore, no skin contact with crumb rubber, full compliance with EU safety and environmental standards. Occasional brushing is the only maintenance needed.
2. High-performance drainage
The perforated foam shock pad beneath the turf creates a dedicated drainage pathway, channeling rainwater rapidly through to the aggregate sub-base. Combined with the backing structure, the system achieves a drainage rate of ≥1,500mm/hour, ensuring the pitch is playable within minutes of even the heaviest downpour, with no surface pooling or slip risk.
3. Zero upkeep
The dual-tone green stripes are achieved through bi-color turf roll construction, not paint or optical effect, so the pattern is permanent regardless of weather or wear. White field markings are pre-woven directly into purpose-cut turf strips and integrated during installation. No repainting, no fading, no maintenance schedule. The pitch looks match-ready every day.
4. Shock-absorbing underpad
The perforated foam underpad does more than drain water, it provides a consistent cushioning layer across the entire pitch footprint, reducing impact stress on knees and joints during falls and tackles. Rated for daily residential use, it delivers the kind of forgiving surface that makes the pitch genuinely child-friendly, without sacrificing the firm, responsive feel needed for proper ball play.
RESULTS and OUTCOMES
"We wanted something that looked like a real pitch but worked for the kids every single day, no rubber bits everywhere, no painting, no fuss. We couldn't be happier with how it came out. It's been the best addition to this house." — Homeowner
